RheinEnergie is currently owned by two shareholders: 80% of the shares are held by GEW Köln AG, which, as a holding company, is in turn directly and indirectly owned 100% by the City of Cologne. The articles of RheinEnergie specify that the majority of the company's shares shall always be in community ownership.
The RWE Group is the shareholder of the remaining 20%. As a strategic minority partner RWE brought in fixed assets during the foundation of RheinEnergie AG in 2002.
