From source to socket

To guarantee a safe, reliable and environmentally friendly supply of electricity today and in the future, RheinEnergie utilises on a three-column concept of autonomous energy generation and procurement. Approximately one third of the electricity is generated in our own combined heat and power plants, the other 75% is purchased from respective preliminary suppliers and via electricity brokerage at the European Energy Exchange in Leipzig.

For its autonomous generation of energy RheinEnergie has for decades utilised the simultaneous production of electricity and heat in just one plant – combined heat and power. The combined heat and power plants are located in the centre of Cologne and its suburbs, e.g. Merheim, Junkersdorf, Merkenich and Niehl.

The electricity generated in the combined heat and power plants is fed into our extensive supply network. Before it actually reaches your home it has passed through numerous stations where a series of transformers reduce the voltage: High voltage electricity (110,000 Volts) enters the electrical substations. It is then progressively reduced to 10,000 V (medium voltage) and transferred to a so-called distribution substation. Here the voltage is reduced for a final time: The electricity then goes on its final journey to your mains sockets with a common voltage of 230 V.

Our experts are commissioned by NETZGesellschaft Rhineland to monitor and control the RheinEnergie electricity network day and night from our control centre using state-of-the-art computer technology. Nevertheless, it may still occur that the supply is interrupted for a short period. This is why our repair service is on call 24/7 – if necessary, a team of specialists will immediately drive out to investigate the fault.

Energy-saving tips

Just switch it off
Stereo systems, VCRs, TVs and other electronic entertainment equipment are often left in standby mode, consuming unnecessary electricity. The devices still use electricity, even though they are switched off. For example, a television left in standby mode can increase your annual electricity bill by 20 euros. Therefore, always completely disconnect devices from the mains when not in use. Why not simply use a socket strip with a switch.
